Hedgehog’s Halloween Treat (Fall Writing Frenzy 2024)

It's been a while since I've posted a contest story. I may have missed one or two. Things have been busy with writing drafts, attending conferences, and non-writing life. One bit of recent, exciting news is that I am a PitchMe finalist, which means more busyness with revisions!

But back to the contest at hand. The story below is my submission for this year's Fall Writing Frenzy contest. The contest was created by Kaitlyn Sanchez, co-hosted by Lydia Lukidis, with permanent (after being a guest last year) judge Ebony Lynn Mudd.

The story was inspired by one of the provided images for the contest. I'm not a fan of the spooky side of Halloween, so the image of the cute little hedgehog caught my eye immediately. I hope you enjoy this little story.

Hedgehog’s Halloween Treat

By Stephanie Maksymiw

Hedgehog’s tummy rumbled.

He dug his little snout under the leaves.

It was the perfect spot to sniff out grub.

When Hedgehog looked up, he saw something terrifying.

It made him curl up into a prickly round ball.

It was a…

ghost!

EEK!

But can a ghost be pricked? Aren’t they just air?

Hedgehog slowly uncurled.

The ghost was gone.

But now there was a…

vampire!

SPIKE BALL!

But can vampires be pricked? Aren’t they bloodless?

Hedgehog uncurled once again.

The vampire was gone.

But now there was a…

mummy!

AAAAHHH!

But can mummies be pricked? Aren’t they all bandaged up?

Hedgehog uncurled one last time.

The mummy was gone.

Hedgehog squinted his little eyes.

He saw the terrifying creatures across the street.

They ate chocolate bars and candy corn.

And they had left Hedgehog an…

apple!

CHOMP!
