It's almost Halloween, which means it's time for the lucky 13th annual Halloweensie contest hosted by Susanna Leonard Hill. The story must be a 100 word or less Halloween story appropriate for children using the words (or slight variation of) werewolf, superstition, and fright.
The first thought that came to my mind was a re-write of Hush Little Baby and I ran with it. It was quite the challenge to find all those rhymes to turn it into a Halloween story. Hope you enjoy. And apologies if you get the song stuck in your head all day.
Hush Little Werepup
By Stephanie Maksymiw
Word Count: 99
Hush little werepup don't bite me, Mama's gonna buy you a black kitty.
And if that kitty's path you cross, Mama's gonna buy you a pumpkin toss.
And if that pumpkin won't go far, Mama's gonna buy you a candy bar.
And if that candy bar is stale, Mama's gonna buy you a Halloween pail.
And if the pail's paint starts to peel, Mama thinks superstitions are real.
And if they're real you'll need good luck, Mama's gonna find a clover to pluck.
And if that clover's luck dies down, you'll still be the frightening little werepup in town.
